Vienna is one of those cities that is easily and enjoyably walkable. If you start in the magnificent Stephansplatz, you can visit St Stephan’s Cathedral, and take the tiny lift to one of the spires for outstanding views across the city. Nearby you’ll also find your high street store, boutique fashion shops and both typically Viennese cafes and your ubiquitous Starbucks. A little further along towards Spittelberg, you’ll find the museum quarter, home to MUMOK, Leopald Museum and the Arcitektur Zentrum Wien amongst others. There are also plenty of parks in the area, including the Volksgarten and nearby you’ll also find the Volkstheater. A short train ride from here you’ll find the Schönnvrybb Palace, where you can wander through the palace itself or through its lavish gardens and Tiergarten, the oldest zoo in Vienna.

If, after all the sightseeing you fancy a little retail therapy, or perhaps a quick caffeine boost, there are a few good shopping streets in Vienna, many of which offer plenty of coffee house options, with rich coffee, assorted pastries and if you’re feeling especially indulgent, maybe a slice of sachertorte. The favourite street for shoppers is away from the city centre, located by Westbahnhof, Mariahilfer Straße offers the greatest number of shops and stores, ideal if you’re looking for more than just clothes and shoes. There are also Kärntner Strasse shopping street and Landstraßer Hauptstraße in Vienna’s 3rd District which offer a good array of shops and eateries. If stopping off for lunch, or contemplating what to have for dinner, you can get Viennese classics such as schnitzel, tafelspitz, and gulasch in plenty of places across Vienna, Figlmüller is one of our favourites. Close to St Stephan’s there is also a Manner shop, selling these iconic wafer biscuits, but they are also readily available in most convenience stores.

If you’re looking to stay right in the heart of Vienna, the 1st District is where you want to be. Some of our favourite include the classic Grand Hotel Wien, which has been a Viennese favourite since the early 20th century, the Hotel Imperial and The Ring, a new type of luxury hotel, with a more laidback, casual vibe. If you’re looking for something modern, both the Hollman Beletag and the Do&Co are popular, whilst the Aldstadt Hotel, offers rooms with a range of style, ideal if you’re not quite sure exactly what you’re after. If travelling during the Christmas Market season, head to Das Triest or the Konig Von Ungarn, both ideally placed for those heading to the Christkindlmärkte.
