About the Epsom Derby
The 12th Earl of Derby and Jockey Club president Sir Charles Bunbury launched the Epsom Derby in 1780, after spinning a coin to decide who the race would be named after. While the earl won the title, Bunbury’s horse Diomed won the first mile-long event.
Today, over 150,000 spectators including Queen Elizabeth attend the quintessentially British national sporting event on the first weekend in June each year, kicking off on the Friday with Group 1 classic the Epsom Oaks followed by the main Epsom Derby the next day.
Legendary winners include Sea Bird in 1965, 2016 champion Harzand, and Shergar, who won by the biggest ever margin of 10 lengths in 1981 and was notoriously later kidnapped. Another famous moment came in 1913, when suffragette Emily Davison was killed after running onto the track in front of King George V’s horse.
